Swami Ji began explaining that Vedic knowledge is revealed knowledge - Shruti. Both shurtis and smirits elaborate on the principles of the vedas. It is the demonstration of these principles that is made in the Puranas.

Purana means “that which is ancient yet new” indicating its timelessness. The objective of the Puranas is also the object of the Vedas to reveal the Self. The Itihasa Puranas are recorded events. The other Puranas include mysticism, cosmology, science, poetry and much more.

The 18 Puranas are divided into 3 main categories – Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh.

To appreciate the true value of the Puranas we must understand the fundamentals of the Vedas. They are bhakti oriented and integrate the intellect and heart.

There are 5 divisions of Puranas

1.Sarga, Fundamental Creation - 5 elements.

2. Prati Sarga - the variety in creation

3. Manvantara teach us how we should live. Dharma and Karma are explained in the Manvantara,

4. Vamsha

5. Vamshanucharitra
